Acasha came to The Wardrobe in preparation to start a new job while experiencing another major life shift, Acasha left college in the spring of 2020 after struggling with mental health issues. Facing unemployment during a global pandemic was daunting, compounded the limited options available to her due to a pre-existing condition. Hopeworks, a technology education and training program just down the street from her in Camden, NJ. The opportunities the program provides and the convenience of the location pushed Acasha take a risk and apply

At Hope Works, Acasha learned technological skills as well as job readiness. Hopeworks helped Acasha secure a 6 month internship in Geographic Information Systems with American Water where she helps analyze data and create maps based on the findings. But when it came time to start the position, she needed help looking the part. That’s when her Career Readiness Coach referred her to The Wardrobe.
When Acasha arrived for her appointment, she was nervous. She had never bought professional attire before – she didn’t know where to start. Luckily the helpful staff soon welcomed her into the store and made her feel comfortable. She found shopping the floor and trying on the clothes relaxing, but it was seeing herself in the outfits that was “enlightening”.
“我很惊讶自己看起来有多专业! It’s not a side of myself I’ve seen before, so looking in the mirror was eye opening. 我感到非常自豪和自信. 这是一个非常振奋人心的时刻.”
Acasha left with 3 full outfits, shoes, and accessories! She loves her internship and plans to continue learning and training so she can keep working in the GIS field. One day Acasha hopes to use her data map skills to identify areas without sufficient access to healthcare and build her own hospitals.
“I feel as though the credentials I received from Hopeworks and the professional image I got from The Wardrobe will help me to advance further in my career”.
Naromie first came to The Wardro be in January of this year in preparation for a job fair. She had recently graduated from the Philadelphia Job Corps as a Certified Home Health Aide and Certified Medical Assistant, At her first appointment she received a dress, cardigan, jewelry, scarf, shampoo, even a book!
“我感觉很好,这真的帮了我! The outfits you gave me helped me feel more confident in myself when I went to interviews and found a job.”
Naromie quickly found work as a Home Health Aide in February while also spending time as a Patient Care 志愿者 at Temple University Hospital. But when the pandemic shut everything down in March, Naromie stopped working.

Naromie was fortunately able to return to work part-time as a Pediatric Home Health Aide and continue volunteering at Temple twice a week. Naromie says being in the hospital is very different now than it was before COVID. 但她并不为COVID患者工作, she is of course still practicing safety measures like social distancing, 定期消毒, 同时戴着口罩和防护盾. In addition to checking on patients’ health and observing medical procedures, Naromie provides magazines and activities to keep patients entertained, 在前台工作, and even participated in a voting campaign to help patients and staff register to vote and request mail-in ballots.
Her presence provides much needed support for the overworked doctors and staff in the hospital, Naromie has had “very severe” asthma since she was a child. 她知道这会给她带来更大的危险, but it was her experience that inspired her to work in healthcare:
“我喜欢帮助别人,这是我的热情! 我喜欢看到人们微笑. I grew up going in and out of the hospital so I know how it is to be a patient and have nurses and doctors helping you.”
Naromie returned to The Wardrobe this fall for employment clothing. She received scrubs for her job as an Aide and business professional attire for volunteering at the hospital. She definitely feels receiving that first interview outfit from The Wardrobe was a crucial step for her career that led to her being able to work during the pandemic.
